Being Fooled Well is a Gift

There is a paradox at the heart of what I do. The sharper the audience, the more they tend to enjoy being fooled. It runs against intuition slightly, so it is worth explaining!

The human brain is a prediction machine. We spend our days quietly forecasting what comes next and feeling a small satisfaction each time we are right. Have you ever seen one of those videos where it tests how fast you can read by only providing the first and last letter of words? Our brain is constantly predicting. A violation of that expectation is normally something we rush to resolve – we want that gap closed.

Magic is the rare exception. Performed well, it holds that gap open. And instead of frustration, it produces something close to delight. The difference is the frame: among trusted company, with nothing at stake but wonder itself, the unexplained stops being a threat and becomes a pleasure.

Here is the part that matters for discerning audiences. When something genuinely cannot be explained, the collision is sharper, brighter and far more memorable for audiences. They are not fooled in spite of their intelligence. They are fooled because of it, and they feel the wonder more keenly for it.

This is also the line between a ‘magic trick’ and intelligent entertainment. A trick invites a contest. It asks, “can you work it out?”, and the guest either wins or not… And sophisticated audiences have no appetite for that. What moves them is something built with enough craft and psychological precision that the question never even arises. Not a puzzle to defeat them, but rather an experience to move them.
