Why Your Brain Wants to Be Fooled

You didn’t miss the trick – your brain deleted it.

In 1999, two Harvard psychologists asked people to count basketball passes in a video. Halfway through, a person in a gorilla suit walked into the middle of the frame, beat their chest, and walked off. Half of the viewers never saw it. The finding – inattentional blindness – is the reason magic works.

I’ve spent forty years on both sides of this. As a performance psychologist, I studied how elite athletes direct their focus under pressure. And as a mind reader, I exploit the fact that most of us can’t! It turns out that these are the same subject, approached from opposite ends.

However, it does go deeper than just attention. In a Swedish study published in Science, people were shown two faces and asked to pick the more attractive one. The card was switched, and they were handed the face they had rejected. Most didn’t notice – and then confidently explained why they’d chosen it. Psychologists call this choice blindness, and Mind Readers have been relying on it for a century. You don’t just miss what’s in front of you – you defend decisions you never made!

And then memory finishes the job… Elizabeth Loftus’s research showed that memory doesn’t replay events – it rebuilds them to be tidier and more dramatic than they were. If you ask someone to describe a magic effect a week later – the coin vanishes from their own hand, the card was never touched, and the impossible gets even more impossible. The best part of a magic show happens after it ends.
