What Do Magic and High Performance Have in Common?

In Blog by Roberto Forzoni

What do Premier League football, Grand Slam tennis, boardroom leadership and close-up magic all have in common? Pressure. Perception. And performance when it matters most.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve been privileged to work as a performance psychologist with elite athletes, world champions and senior leadership teams. At the same time, I’ve built a parallel career as a mind-reading magician. I perform at luxury and corporate events where every moment is live, unscripted, and high-stakes.

Recently, I sat down with Surfe to record a podcast exploring that journey – from dressing rooms to boardrooms and ballrooms. We unpacked the psychology behind high-performing teams, resilience under pressure, confidence, culture, and why the best performers are rarely just the most talented – they are the most psychologically prepared.

What fascinates me is how deeply psychology and magic overlap.

Magic is not about ‘tricks’. It is about attention, expectation and belief. It is about understanding how the brain filters reality and how easily perception can be shaped. In leadership and teamwork, the same principles apply.

When I perform psychological magic at a corporate event, audiences experience these principles in real time. When I deliver a keynote on teamwork, performance culture and leadership, I translate those same principles into practical, evidence-based strategies that leaders can apply immediately.

In a distracted, digital world, live experiences cut through. Whether it is a boardroom keynote or a close-up magic performance at a luxury event, my goal is the same. To shift perception and to create connection.

How Can You Get Involved?

If you are planning a conference, leadership meeting, client event or awards evening, I would love to explore how we can combine corporate speaking and psychological magic to create something genuinely memorable.
